Disco: One of the earliest forms of dance music, which emerged in the 1970s and was characterized by its strong beat, prominent bassline, and use of electronic instruments. Disco music was primarily played in dance clubs and discotheques, and was popularized by artists such as Donna Summer, Chic, and the Bee Gees.

In the 1980s,

Electronic Dance Music (EDM): began to emerge as a new genre, with the rise of new technologies such as drum machines and synthesizers. This led to the creation of subgenres such as house, techno, and acid house.

House Music: Originated in Chicago and characterized by its repetitive 4/4 beat, and its use of samples and drum machines.

Techno: Originated in Detroit and known for its heavy use of electronic instruments and its emphasis on rhythm and beats.

In the 1990s and 2000s,

New forms of dance music emerged such as Drum and Bass, Trance, and Breakbeat. These subgenres were mostly created by electronic music producers and DJs and were popular in rave and club scenes.
In the last twenty years, dance music has undergone many changes and has seen the emergence of several new subgenres.

Electro House: A subgenre of dance music which blended elements of house and techno with influences from hip-hop and funk. This subgenre was popularized by artists such as Daft Punk, Justice, and Soulwax.

Dubstep: In the early 2010s, emerged as a new subgenre of dance music, characterized by its heavy use of bass, and its emphasis on the use of syncopated rhythms. Dubstep was popularized by artists such as Skrillex, Rusko, and Bassnectar.

In the 2010's,
There are a few subgenres that have seen a rise in popularity such as:
Future Bass: is a subgenre of electronic dance music characterized by its use of dreamy melodies and atmospheric soundscapes.
Bass House: Is a subgenre of house music characterized by its heavy use of bass and its incorporation of elements from UK garage and bassline.

In the last years,
There is a rise of a new subgenre called "Melodic House & Techno" characterized by its incorporation of melodic elements, often from progressive house or trance, into techno music resulting in a blend of both genres.

Overall, dance music has continued to evolve and diversify in the last twenty years, and new subgenres continue to emerge. The genre continues to be popular worldwide, with electronic dance music festivals and events being held all over the world.
